Santa Fe Railway 1980's era

By Stephen M. Priest, MMR

The mid-1980's saw a major change in the lettering style applied to rolling stock. The stylish Railroad Roman was traded for more simplistic Helvetica-type lettering. Increased simplification of the paint schemes removed the black from the ends of the cars and eventually the large Super Shock Control and large Circle-Cross as well. The comapny also began reorganizing the way locomotives were utilized. In an attempt to cut down on the environmental impact associated with fueling and servicing locomotives in out laying points, the Santa Fe adopted a service and deliver method of motive power distribution. Most outlying diesel servicing points were razed and the motive power needed to support operations in that area were serviced at major points and shipped (while working) in train to that point where the needed power was then delivered. Fuel levels and FRA inspections were closely monitored and upon need the units were then swapped out for a freshly serviced set.
