1929 DIVISION DESK MAP SOLD OUT This map depicts a significant moment in the history of the Santa Fe. The map was printed at the height of the optimism and expansion which was cut short by the great depression. It shows the Colmar Cut off, Boise City Line and St Louis projects underway or projected. The Boise City line was to be finished in the thirties, but the Colmar cut off died on the vine. The St Louis dream was realized with the Gateway Western and now via BN. The map was apparently issued in reduced quantities due to the October 24, 1929 stock market crash.

These desk maps came to my attention when working on the Santa Fe System History Map in 1987 and became the major authority weather a line was included on the History map or not. During this project I demonstrated to my boss the encapsulation process on a 1929 map and obtained his backing to encapsulate one of each year of the maps in the collection. The encapsulation is an archival process that protects and reinforces the most case brittle old maps I found rolled together in a tube allowing them to once again be used and handled. In July 1988 the Engineering Service Department moved from Chicago to Topeka and during the move out it was decided that the extra copies of the desk maps no longer had a place at Santa Fe.

I have personally encapsulated and treated this map with a deacidification spray (WEI T'O #10) to protect and extend the maps life. With reasonable care this map should now be safe for many more years. The most significant hazard to be guarded against is fading from intensive light. The map should be displayed were it will not receive direct sunlight. The encapsuled map will not roll tightly with out danger of delaminating. Roll loosely to carry and store flat if possible. The map is loose in side the capsule with an air gap on all sides this makes it possible to remove and reencapsulate the map if it's protective cover gets damaged or for other reasons.
