
The Road did not have a full set of officers until several years after they began operation. I have given them as complete as possible for the first few years, as follows: -
FIRST PRESIDENT: Col. C. K. Holliday. Elected September 17th, 1860. Succeeded by S. C. Pomeroy, January 13, 1864.
THE FIRST SUPERINTENDENT: Mr. T. J. Peter. Appointed October 1st, 1869. He was chief Engineer, Mr. Peter had been acting as Superintendent and Chief Engineer for the construction company before his election as General Manager October, 10th, 1870. He resigned May 22nd, 1873. Capt. John R. Ellinwood, of North Topeka, Kansas, was Mr. Peter's principal assistant Engineer, on location and construction with Mr. Fred Lord, as assistant. Appointments made October 1st, 1868. Mr. Peter had previously been City Engineer of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Porter was succeeded by Mr. Geo. H. Nettleton. The second Superintendent who was appointed several months before Mr. Peter resigned, viz: July 1st, 1872. He (Mr. Nettleton) also acted as Auditor and Purchasing Agent. He resigned July 1st, 1874. Succeeded by C. F. Morse, who was afterwards made General Superintendent. He resigned in the summer of 1878.
THE FIRST TREASURER: Mr. M. C. Dickey, elected September 17th, 1860. Succeeded by Mr. D. L. Lakin, January 13th, 1864.
THE FIRST GENERAL FREIGHT AGENT: Mr. M. L. Sargent. Appointed October 5th, 1869. He also acted as first Treasurer, Auditor and Paymaster. Mr. Jas. Knox was his assistant. These two men did the work of the whole road for a long time. Mr. Sargent had been acting in the capacities noted some months before his regular appointment. He was succeeded by Mr. Edward Wilder, Assistant Treasurer, August 1st, 1870, who was made Treasurer May 12th, 1876. Harry McKinney was his Cashier and Mr. Jas. Moore, Paymaster.
THE FIRST AUDITOR: Mr. O. P. Rice. Appointed September 7th, 1870. Succeeded by Mr. M. L. Sargent, May 26th, 1871. Succeeded by Mr. Geo. H. Nettleton, July 1st, 1872. Succeeded by Mr. A. N. Young, May 12th, 1876.
THE FIRST CONDUCTOR: - Was Mr. W. W. Fagan. Appointed May 1st, 1869. Succeeded by Mr. Wm. Janney, October 5th, 1869, when Mr. Fagan was made Assistant Superintendent. Mr. Fagan resigned from the Santa Fe when he was made General Superintendent of the Kansas Midland. On account of friction with the Kansas Midland and the Lawrence & Topeka Railway Company, he was set back to Superintendent, October 15th, 1874. Resigned September 27, 1875, account of sale of the K. C. T. & W. R. R. Co., on which date he was succeeded by Mr. W. H. Bancroft. Mr. Bancroft was succeeded by Mr. A. A. Egbert, March 1st, 1875, who was succeeded by Mr. J. D. Gunn, January 1st, 1876.
THE FIRST TRAIN DISPATCHER: J. W. Ellsworth. He was appointed May 31st, 1870.
THE FIRST SUPERINTENDENT OF TELEGRAPH: Mr. J. W. Tracey, appointed May 1st, 1872. Resigned September 1st, 1875. He was succeeded by Mr. R. E. Torrington. Appointed September 1st, 1875. Resigned July 1st, 1878. Succeeded by Mr. R. B. Gemmell.
THE FIRST ROADMASTER: Mr. Henry S. Chapin. Appointed December 1st, 1869. Mr. Jonas Stafford was the first Section Foreman. Appointed March 1st, 1869.
THE FIRST SUPERINTENDENT OF BRIDGES, BUILDINGS AND WATER SERVICE: Mr. Wm. Francis. Appointed December 1st, 1869. Mr. J. Armstrong was his assistant. Succeeded by Mr. Jas. D. Burr, C. E., January 1st, 1877. Mr. J. M. Meade was his assistant, appointed May 1st, 1877.
From May 22nd, 1873 to December 17th, 1877, there was no general manager, until Mr. W. B. Strong was appointed on the latter date.
THE FIRST MASTER PAINTER: A. Allman, appointed January 1st, 1872.
THE FIRST MASTER MECHANIC: H. V. Farris, appointed January 1st, 1872. Robert Mood, Assistant Master Mechanic, appointed January 1st, 1872.
