Nepesta Gravel Pit

During the summer of 1902, gravel pit was opened near Nepesta on Colorado Division. Tracks were placed to accommodate the loading of gravel which was loaded into cars with a steam shovel. Gravel from pit was placed as ballast as under track for a distance of about thirty miles between La Junta and Pueblo, and for a distance of about thirty miles as ballast south from La Junta on the New Mexico Division. On the Arkansas RIver Division gravel as ballast was placed under track from Dodge City to Garden CIty and from Holly to La Junta. On Western Division gravel from ballast was used between Kinsley and Wright. In all approximately eight hundred thousand yards was used as ballast.

In 1910 the Railroad Company discontinued to use the gravel as ballast and instead are using slag from the Pueblo Smelter and Refining Company at Pueble, in this territory.
