From the best authorities I can get I have obtained the following data : -
"The original charter was granted to Leavenworth, Lawrence & Fort Gibson Railroad, February 12th, 1858, name changed January 21, 1867 to Leavenworth, Lawrence & Galveston Railroad Company. Sold under forclosure October 22, 1878 to the L.L.& G.R.R. Co. Sold to the Santa Fe October 15, 1899.
"In 1865 Major Henning moved to Lawrence to take charge of the building of the road from Lawrence South. December 30th, 1867, grading reported finished to Ottawa. Track reached Ottawa in 1868. Trains began running, Lawrence to Ottawa, August 21, 1868.
"There was a Howe Truss Bridge built over the Kaw River at Lawrence in 1872 with pile approaches. This connected to the Kansas Pacific and they hauled a baggage car and smoker for the L.L. & G. to Leavenworth and back for some time for the latter road to hold their charter, etc. They never built to Leavenworth. This bridge was in use until 1889, when it was pulled down (rotted down) and abandoned. The remains of the old road bed can still be traced on the ground though, it was nearly all washed away in the big flood of 1903. It crossed the Kansas City Branch of the Santa Fe some 600' or 800' east of the present Passenger Depot. Turned over to the Eastern Division, August 1st, 1899.
"Telegraph line was built in 1868."
