Selections From Meade's Manual

First District Dodge City to Syracuse 101.40 Miles

Same incorporation, receivers, ect, as noted from Newton to Dodge City line.

The first surveys were made in 1871-72, under A.A. Robinson, Chief Engineer. J.D. Burr and George B. Lake were Locating Engineers. C.B. Coons, J.T. Crank, C.E. Poor, A.C. Swartz and T.W. Sterritt were Assistant Engineers on Construction. Dick Coleman was Track Engineer.

Grading started in the Spring of 1872. The Contractors ere Wiley & Cutler of Lawrence, Kansas. James Preston of Atchison, Kansas. Cunning & McIntosh and D. Coleman, together with a lot of small subs made up the list.

Track reached Syracuse, November 20, 1872.

George H. Nettleton was General Superintendent, W. H. Bancroft, Division Superintendent.
