
Garden City new passenger brick veneer depot was built by Harvey Stiver, contractor, Kamas City, Missouri. Work on the depot was commenced in July 1907, and completed in March 1908. The railway Company maintains two depots at this point, passenger depot and freight depot.
The Garden City Sugar and Land Company, at Garden City, Kansas, built a railroad known as the Garden City Western Railway, constructed during the year 1915. This railroad extends west from the Sugar Factory at Garden City in a northwesterly direction about fourteen miles through farm lands, held by the Garden City Sugar and Land Company. Winfield Holbrook was Engineer on railroad construction. Road built to take care of products of Garden City Sugar and Land Company's holdings in land.
In 1909 the Nebraska, Kansas and Southern Railway was laid our and building from Garden City, Kansas, to Stockton, Kansas, being end of track on Central Branch of the Missouri Pacific Railway. Line run in a northeasterly direction from Garden City to the western part of drainage Pawnee River, thence east on the north side of river to the east line of Finney County; thence northeast to Ness City, Brownell, Ellis, Curick and Stockton. This road is laid out from Stockton to Superior, Nebraska, nothing having been done south of Garden City, but the road planned to build from Garden City, Kansas to Trinidad, Colorado. From Superior they intend to build to Omaha. Omaha having promised to build the line from Superior to Omaha, if the rest of the line from Garden City to Superior was built. It was said at the time the road started that it was financed by the Carnagie Trust Company, between Garden City and Stockton in the amount of $4,300,000.00 and bonds to the amount of $2,000.00 per mile were to be secured. The City of Garden City was to give $20,000.00 for terminal at that point. Bonds and money for terminal facilities to be turned over December 31st, 1909, when road was to be in operation between Garden City an Stockton. In 1909 grade was built out form Garden City, 20 miles having been completed in Finney County. Grade started at Ness City, also on this side of Stockton it was planned to push new line as fast as possible. The railroad had a connection to our track and permission to place a wye at Garden City by General Manage Hurley. However, only a connection was place, which has been removed. Track was laid out 12.6 Mi. from Garden City end. Steel contracted from the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, weight 70#.
A man by the name of Burnsides was the promoter and Cunningham the Chief Engineer.
This road never has been operated. The rail fastenings and ties from this road were sold in 1915 at Sherriff's sale to the Garden City Western Railway Company, a subsidiary of the Garden City Sugar and land Company.
