Incorporated in Kansas as the Leavenworth, Northern & Southern Railway Company October 24th, 1885. Sold February 15th, 1899 to the A.T.&S.F.Ry.Co.. Built in 1886-87. Opened, November 1st, 1887.

The New River Bridge at Bonner was first built as a Howe Truss on pile piers and pile approaches. Taken down and replaced by old steel spans on stone piers in 1896. These spans were taken down and replaced by new steel bridge and pile approach (East End) standard loading in 1915.

Len Smith of Leavenworth was the promoter of this road and its first President. He got Leavenworth to vote $50,000.00 to the road. It was all spent in Leavenworth, $20,000.00 for the Freight Depot and $30,000.00 for the Passenger Depot. Mr. Smith had surveys made through from Hawthorne to Lincoln, Nebraska.

The following were the Locating and Division Engineers in Charge of Construction.

First Chief Engineer and Locating Engineer was Major Geo. W. Vaughn, M.D. Purlin, Asst. Chief Engineer. Subsequently the road was sold and A.A. Robinson became the Chief Engineer. B.R. Whitney, W.B. Searle, E.W. Olds, Jas. Stewart, J.H. Burlingame, H.C. Perkins, F.T. Robinson were Division Enginners in Charge of Construction; the latter was resident Engineer.
