Aerial Photographs of Eastern Oklahoma

Contributed by Evan Stair

From the Ok. State University (Edmond Low Library.)

Cushing Jct.
Cushing
Here are some landmarks some of which still stand today in this 1956 aerial photograph of Cushing. Note the MKT overhead crossing in the middle of the Refinery. The passenger yard is clear and the depot is just above the circled "4." South of the depot you can see the MKT connection track which loops wide to the left hand (west portion of the photo.) Then there is the freight yard complete with the open air turntable.

Ripley, OK.
This is an aerial photograph of Ripley, Oklahoma. Starting from the top left hand corner and running to the wye there are three water crossings. The first two cross Stillwater Creek and the last is the Cimarron River bridge that washed out in 1957. The track here is the Stillwater district. The track running from the wye to the right (east) is the Cushing district. The track running from the wye to the lower left side of the photograph is the Stillwater District. Just to the right of the railroad bridge is what would one day become the state highway 108 bridge. State Highway 108 had not been constructed at this time which is evident from the photo. This bridge has since been replaced slightly to the right of its location here. In addition there was a suspension bridge just to the right of the present location of the state highway 108 bridge.

More from Evan Stair about aerial Photographs

David Peters is a longtime friend of mine. His title is Senior Library Technical Assistant at Oklahoma State University and he is in charge of the Map Room. David told me that these photos are now public domain. Copies of the prints that I attempted to photograph using a digital camera are available for sale at ~ $15.00 a pop. They are about a yard square and show some intersting details. Basically the aerial photographs show all of the Stillwater District (although I did not find any photos of Esau Jct, E.O. Jct but I didn't have much time to search.) My favorite shots show the Gauntlet brige North of Cushing, Cushing Jct, Cushing, Ripley and the Cimarron river bridge. I am going to purchase a hand held scanner and hopefully get some better images.

Here are some contacts if you are interested.
