After heavy rains and flooding, ATSF Ry. (former Eastern Oklahoma Railway) bridge 27 collapsed when engine 392 and caboose 329 tried to cross it on March 19, 1909. The trestle was adjacent to the Cimarron River, two miles east of Coyle, Oklahoma, and three miles west of Goodnight, Oklahoma. According to Bob Cunningham and M.C. Rouse, the roof of the engine cab separated on impact and floated down the Cimarron about a mile toward Goodnight. The engineer who floated on this wooden cab was able to reach the river bank at that point. The fireman almost drowned. His foot was caught in the wrecked cab, but he was able to escape death by removing his shoe and scramble through the water and mud to safety. The caboose was carrying a construction gang being on its way to repair washouts east of the wreck. This line, which ran from Guthrie east to Cushing and Stillwater through Pawnee, was plagued by frequent washouts during its 60 year history. The tracks were taken up from two miles east of Eastern Oklahoma Jct. through Ripley and Cushing, and from Ripley to Stillwater in 1959. A great flood of the Cimarron occurred in 1957 which destroyed the Cimarron River trestle at Ripley, Oklahoma' suspending service. The Santa Fe declined to bear the expenses of repairing the bridge and petitioned for abandonment. R. Cunningham photo, J.Cammalleri collection.
