Engine 392, April 25, 1909 - Pulled From The Creek

Material From Joseph A. Cammalleri

Engine 392 being pulled from creek two miles east of Coyle, Oklahoma, on April 25, 1909.

Trestle was washed out by heavy rains and flood on March 29, 1909, while train was on night run.

The rebuilt concrete piers of this trestle were still in place in 1966 when I explored the grade.

Caboose 329, a blindside caboose was left dangling on the trestle, with the engine plunging into the adjacent Cimmaron River. Engineer was allegedly picked up in mud or drowned according to whose tale one chooses to believe.

Photo is from R. Cunningham, J. Cammalleri collection.
