In 1903 Santa Fe reorganized and classified its freight car fleet into the classification system used to the end of the Santa Fe. In this system a two letter abbreviation is assigned to each type classification of car with a sequential number (originally a letter) assigned to each design group in the class.
Cars were only reclassified when they were modified or rebuilt for use in a different service. Cars were often rebuilt or upgraded, such as steel rebuilds of wood cars, and remained in the same class. A few classes contained only one car, and a few classes were empty, containing no cars. The empty classes were assigned to orders or proposed orders for cars that were not built.
The folio 211 is organized by this clasification system as is this index to the on line version. Each classification will have an index page listing the individual class members in the classification. From the classification index you will be able to clic to the individual class member pages as they are added. Due to the size of this effort it will be a long time before more than a few examples are available on line. In the meantime the Eastern Archives and indeed the Western Archive of our organization has a more or less complete set of these documents and they are available for order.
As of 10-28-99, we have uploaded some .jpg images - just to get your feedback. In general they are smaller than the .pdf BUT the quality may be a little less. Let us know which you prefer.
