Mr. Jack Elwood Santa Fe Engine Service 1940 - 1981

Fireman 1940 retired Road Foreman of Engines 1981

Recieved the following from Stan Kistler March 17, 1999 referring to the request for first person accounts of serive with Santa Fe

I am enclosing two such accounts by my good friend Jack Elwood of Fresno, California. You may recall the clinic that Jack and his son gave at the 1997 convention in Sacramento.

As a bit of background, Jack Elwood hired out on the AT&SF at Los Angeles in engine service in 1940. He worked all over the Los Angeles division as a fireman, and later, engineer until 1966. At this time he was appointed Road Foreman of Engines on the Albuquerque division at Gallup, New Mexico. In 1971 he was transferred in the same capacity to the Valley division at Fresno, California where he served until his retirement in 1981. He lives with his wife, Betty Ann in Fresno. Jack and Betty Ann raised two sons, both of whom are now engineers, one working out of Portland, Oregon for Amtrak, and the other for the BNSF in Fresno.

Thanks Stan and Jack!!
