Lomax, Ill. Nov. 18, 1886
B. F. Booker, Esq.,
Keokuk, Iowa
Dear Sir:
I express to you today the profile of the line recently run from Galesburg toward Henry via Victoria.
The heavy work encountered near Watego in crossing the drainage of Court Creek might be
considerably reduced by running near the southern line of Watego and crossing Court Creek about
east of that point. The distance would be increased so much that it is doubtful if it would pay.
The country through which this line passes is good prairie land except along the streams where
there is a growth of scrubby oak and hazzle brush.
There is no stone or timber suitable for railway construction.
The whole survey is in the coal measures and through several mines worked for local use at
different points near the line. The vein worked is a good quality of soft bituminous coal and said to
be about 4 to 4-1/2 feet thick. The same vein is worked 30 inches thick near Galesburg, but in the
vicinity of Victoria the greater thickness is found.
There is strong sentiment along the line in favor of the construction of the road and I think
depot grounds and perhaps some right of way might be donated.
Very truly yours
(Signed) H. R. Weeks
