Arkansas River Division

Second District Continued

Amity Stone Depot

Salvation Army people donated $1,000. toward the building of this depot, which was built of stone, secured from Castle Rock. The Salvation Army People bought five or six sections of land in the vicinity of Amity, on the north side of our track, in the Arkansas River Bottom and started to irrigate and develop same, but shortly after this project was started the country overflowed. Water from the Arkansas River and seepage from the higher ground filled the ground with alkali which the Salvation Army people had bought, and they abandoned the project in 1910. In connection with this, there was an orphanage established about a mile north of Amity Depot, where it was planned to bring orphans from the larger cities and school them at the orphanage established. There is quite a large building located now at this point, but it is not used for any purpose whatever. The whole project having been abandoned.
