Sunset Crossing A.T. July 31, 1871
Mr. F. S. Hodges,
Asst. Engr., A. & P. RR.
Dear Sir:
You will find in extending your line down the valley of the Rio Puerco of the
West, but few points that will demand much examination in advance of the survey. At
the Canon of the Puerco, about fifty miles below Ft. Wingate the Wagon Road leaves the
valley and crossing a small ridge not above 110 feet high enters a valley tributary to the
Puerco but not continue in it as it bears to the left so as to reach water at El Maga
Springs.
I did not have time to examine the Puerco Canon (I trust you will do it before
running the line) but am led to believe that a better line can be found by crossing the
ridge just mentioned and continuing down the tributary valley to the main one. Below
Navajo Springs the sand hills close in and it may be advisable to keep on the left or south
side of the Puerco crossing some of the sand hills. This side of the Puerco I think will be
found to be the best and also to cross the little Colorado at the junction, the south side of
it appearing to me to be the regular and less broken by washes. I will send you
information that will enable you to connect with the line to be started from this point or
near it.
I am in hopes that you will reach this place with your line in forty days, the latest,
and if so, desire you to return to Agua Azul by way of Zuni making a reconnaissance of
that route.
I have not much expectation of finding a favorable line from Agua Azul north of
San Mateo Mountain to the Rio Grande but still desire to have that route thoroughly
examined.
Yours very truly
