Selections From The Splinters

The following arrangements have been made for your parties:

In the matter of men for Mr. Jones' party: Mr. Jones had engaged levelman, rodman, three chainmen and two axemen, and I am therefore going to fill his party as far as may be from these men. I had, however, at your direction, sent out letters asking the men on the two lists furnished me, if they wished places on the terms you named, and will, therefore, have to provide for those who have accepted this offer. Mr. Jones will, therefore, have his own levelman and rodman and as many of the other men as he has arranged with as there may be places for. Mr. Jones will spend Monday, the 31st, in Topeka, and at that time I will advise you just when he will arrive and just what men he will take with him.

In this connection, I would say that I wrote Edwin Johnson of Guthrie on the 22d, asking him if he cared for a position as chainman at $30 a month, and he at once wrote saying "Yours at hand offering position as Chainman. I shall be willing t o accept your offer if, as I suppose, an opportunity for promotion is given, and can report August 1st." I wish you would either see or write Mr. Johnson and see whether on closer acquaintance he is the kind of man you want, as having suggested his employment, we would like to carry it out is he is suitable. Do not, however, feel bound to provide a place for him on the letter sent.

I will send as cook for Mr. Jones' party, J. H. Lamberson, who has, I understand, cooked for Mr. Moore, Paymaster.

You wrote on the 27th asking for your outfit at Ponca to be loaded and shipped to Bliss. I am in receipt of a wire from the agent that your outfit has been loaded and
gone forward to Bliss.

I would be glad if you would advise me by wire where you wish Mr. Jones to report, and whether I had best direct his men to Ponca or Bliss. Unless otherwise advised, I will direct them to report at Ponca.

It seems to me that we should utilize as many as we can find places for of the men whom Mr. Jones has engaged, as he is certainly in a position to judge of their usefulness.

The position of transitman, however, seems open on Mr. Jones' party, as we have not yet heard from Mr. W. L. Allen of Birmingham, Alabama, and if you care to have Mr. R. T. Parker take that place, I can probably arrange to have him do so, provided Mr. Jones thinks it best.

I have enquired to-day by wire as to the instruments, but have not yet received reply.
